Library of Rescued Memories

Centropa Hungary is creating an innovative way of bringing Jewish history to schools in the region. We initiate a project based on one of our traveling exhibition, and our online educational materials (interviews, photos, multimedia films, open source website for teachers to share ideas and projects). Using these resources we are going to build up educational narratives, methods and lesson plans together with teachers and educators from Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Centropa uses advanced technologies to preserve Jewish memory in Central and Eastern Europe, and then uses those same technologies to disseminate our findings in creative and innovative ways.In the V4 countries alone,we interviewed 400 Holocaust survivors, collected and digitized thousands of family photos. We are disseminating the stories and photos through our educational programs that include a multi-lingual website, several exhibitions as well as publications.
In the frames of this project Centropa will:
- Use our traveling exhibition "A century of Jewish memory",our online database of Jewish family stories and photos, and our educational films in order to help schools in all V4 countries to implement creative, interactive learning programs that are crossing borders(The exhibition maps the stories of Jewish families from Central Europe in the 20th century. The life experiences of families from the Czech Republic, Hungary,Poland, and Slovakia is represented on about 60 canvases, and organized around themes showing various scenes of life such as: on vacation,at leisure,in the army,at work, religious life,Holocaust).
- Will organize an international seminar for teachers from the V4 countries. At this seminar teachers will share ideas, best practices, and develop lesson plans on how to teach the Holocaust and 20th century Jewish history.
- Produce a new multi-media film on our interview with István Domonkos
- Offer an online platform where teachers can upload their lesson plans and projects. This helps them to get inspired by each other and nonetheless it enables them to find partners for their projects – to become members of an international community of teachers.
- We will announce a project competition where we will give prizes to the most creative and innovative students.
